You must be
so glad I found you.
Today I was
coming home with my mom and we found a hamster cage beside the dustbin at the
lift landing. The cage was quite big and elaborate for one hamster, and at
first glance it just seemed as though someone’s hamster just died and so they
dumped the empty cage there.
But at
closer inspection, I noticed a little fur ball curled up at the side of the
cage. It’s a hamster!! I instantly realized. It was grey in colour. Next, I got
quite disgusted because I thought, what if the hamster is dead, and the owner
just didn’t bother disposing of the hamster properly, but just dump the whole
cage, carcass and all? So I knocked on the cage lightly, but the hamster didn’t
stir at all. Only finally after I knocked like 3 times, did I actually see it
wriggle a little and curl itself back up. ITS ALIVE! ITS ALIVE; A LIVE HAMSTER.
OH MY.
I tried
persuading my mom to let us bring it back, I really did. “How can you just
leave an animal in distress like that??” But my mom wouldn’t relent. She’s
afraid it might die on her. She’s afraid she might have to end up cleaning its
cage and blah. Seriously, though, I didn’t really WANT to keep the hamster as a
PET. My first thought was just to SAVE it from dying of hunger or neglect or
cold or abuse or being hunted down by Ginger of the 2nd floor. But mom said no and that was that. So with a
heavy heart I followed her into the lift, hoping that wouldn’t be the last time
Hamham moved…
Back home I
immediately called my personal emergency hotlines: Leanne and Yvonne. I knew
Yvonne was probably at school or busy studying, so I texted Leanne first thing.
Previously, she’s helped I think at least 2 dogs, one lost and on abandoned,
find their homes/brought to SPCA, so I thought she should be able to handle a
hamster. Fortunately she said she would take the hamster in and bring it to the
SPCA on Friday. PHEW.
I hate that
I can be so helpless. What if I wasn’t with my mom? I don’t think I’d have the
guts to bring it home either. I don’t think I would have called any animal
rescue groups for a hamster. BUT, at least the hamster is safe for now. Leanne
is even thinking of just keeping it for good. Now, all we need is a name… Haha.
I know, it’s
JUST a hamster. But a hamster is still a life right? It’s still cute right? It
didn’t cause you any hurt or any harm right? Would you bear to just leave it to
die in the dark? Once you know it’s there, defenseless, can you still turn a
blind eye to it?
Updates on
my very eventful life (sense the sarcasm?): Work is over! Switching focus to
church camp preps and CCA! Watching Death Note (anime). Gripping plot but not
exactly addicting. Get the
difference? Hmm. But the guys are super smart. No shuai ge’s though. ):
