why so serious?--"Raise your glass", by Pink.Who said watching seemingly pointless videos on youtube is well, pointless?For one, it is entertaining. Second, I don't nagged at by my anti-drama-serial dad. Third, I learn new words, like 'brain candy'.Brain candy. It sounds better than 'food for thought'.Candor, Florida.At a glance, it is a perfect little town, where kids do chores at home, do their homework diligently, and eat healthily. There are no rebels there, unless the kid's new. Soon, however, the new kids get influenced to be good.Influenced?Brainwashed.On the outside, Oscar Banks, the son of the town's founder, is a model student. He's smart, the class president, popular, a wonderful example for Candor kids. No one knows that all that is merely a disguise. Except his clients. His clients, the richer new kids whom Oscar help escape their fate in Candor. And only Oscar is intelligent enough to keep the brainwashing Messages from penetrating his own thoughts, by using his own Messages to keep them out.One night, Oscar meets Nia, a spunky skateboarder and stealer of spray cans. Nia, the lilac smelling girl full of attitude whom Oscar, obviously, falls for. Coupled with the troublesome Sherman who wrecks his own excape plan and continues to stay on to hamper Oscar's efforts to get close to Nia, Oscar is having a hard time protecting Nia and avoiding his girlfriend's wrath. He can't decide. Deciding if he should be selfish and keep Nia in Candor, and risk her getting brainwashed to become an empty headed good kid, or lose his beloved and send her off, like all his other clients.His own wants get the better of him, but as Nia learns the truth from Sherman, she begins to hate Oscar for lying to her, not comprehending Oscar's effort to protect her. Inevitably, they break up. Days later, a bout of vandalism cases arises, and immediately Oscar knew who the culprits were. Not wanting to spoil his good boy image, Oscar caused the culprits to be punished in the worst way possible.Nia and Sherman changed completely after that, but Oscar missed the old Nia. So what does he do to salvage the situation? Will he put on his 'goody' image and see her become another carbon copy of the goody-two-shoes, or take the risk and run for it?A twist in the story makes for a bittersweet ending, that gives a unsettling, nagging feeling to the reader. Thinking for ouselves is a right, not a privilege that can be taken away like that. This book, Candor, by Oam Bachorz, is brain candy for you.That is, if you get my amateurish book review.Others rate movies, books and the likes by stars, or ticks. Well, if this means anything, I finished this book in 4 hours (not including breaks. I started last night and finished it this morning. I would have finished it last night if not for the fact that my dad wanted his bed back, and the whole house was asleep already.)
